Finnish language is studied in all subjects. In each subject, students learn ways of expressing ideas typical of that field. For example, in biology and chemistry, they learn how to write a research report, while in home economics, they learn how to read instructions. Each subject also has a specific vocabulary that differs from everyday language. For instance, the word light has a different meaning in everyday language and in physics. In different subjects, students also study vocabulary and expressions common to all fields of knowledge, known as academic language, which differs significantly from casual spoken language. For example, ”what preceded the events and what led to what happened” might be expressed in casual language as ”what happened before and after”. Precede and lead to are typical expressions of academic language, as are terms like involuntary and intentional. Academic written expression must be learned in all classes, as it is needed in all further studies after comprehensive school.
