How is Finnish language and literature studied as a second language (S2) – 5

In S2 classes, students also learn about Finnish culture, especially literature. It is essential for those living in Finland to understand the surrounding society, language, and culture. Reading Finnish literature and media in class helps young people become familiar with Finnish life and customs. During Finnish lessons, such topics as people’s thoughts and values cherished in society, like the objectivity and truthfulness in news reporting, are discussed. It is important that students are able to reach news about their society and that they know how to assess its truthfulness. Therefore, media literacy is practiced constantly.

The topics of texts vary widely. The more students know about the world in general, the easier it is for them to participate in class and produce their own work. Reading a variety of texts in their free time, talking with different adults and following independent news media provide a greater understanding of the world than the often narrow and biased social media world. These methods also expand vocabulary and ways of expression. Learning Finnish happens everywhere, not just in class.
